Robot mower theft protection comes down to three layers: a PIN lock that makes the mower useless to anyone else, 4G GPS tracking that tells you where it went, and physical steps that keep it out of sight in the first place. Are robot mowers stolen? Not often, but a $2,000 machine sitting alone on a front lawn is an obvious target, and most theft is opportunistic. The good news is that most 2026 wire-free models ship with real anti-theft features. The catch is that a few don’t, and some charge a subscription for the part that matters most.
Are robot mowers actually stolen?
Yes, occasionally. There’s no solid US data on how often robot mowers are stolen, and manufacturers such as ECOVACS describe it as relatively uncommon. What owners and support pages agree on is the risk profile:
- Front yards and corner lots are the highest risk because the mower is visible from the street and can be picked up in seconds.
- Unfenced yards with the dock near a sidewalk or driveway are next.
- Fenced backyards with a latched gate are low risk, especially if the dock is out of sight.
A robot mower weighs roughly 20 to 40 lb, so it’s easy to carry. What makes theft rare is that a locked, account-bound mower is hard to resell, and thieves who know that tend to skip it. Your job is to make sure your mower is on the “not worth it” side of that calculation.

A few notes on reading this table:
- “Not listed” doesn’t always mean “doesn’t exist.” ECOVACS’s own anti-theft blog describes PIN protection and alarms for its GOAT line, but the US spec sheets for the LiDAR Pro models don’t list them. Confirm on the current product page before buying if theft is a concern.
- Spec sheets are terse. Several brands that list only “GPS tracking” also use a PIN at power-on and bind the mower to your account. The table shows what’s published, not the full story.
- The weakest options for theft-prone yards are the GOAT O1000 LiDAR Pro (no 4G), the ANTHBOT M9 and M5 LiDAR (features unconfirmed), the Yarbo (not detailed, 4G sold separately), and the YUKA mini 2 and Sunseeker X5 unless you add their modules.
Why 4G GPS tracking is the feature that matters
Every wire-free mower knows where it is inside your yard, and RTK and LiDAR models know it to within an inch or two. The question is whether it can tell you where it is after it leaves.
- Wi-Fi only: the mower reports its position while it’s on your home network. Once it’s carried past the edge of your Wi-Fi, it goes silent.
- Bluetooth only: range is tens of feet. Useful for setup, useless for theft.
- 4G (cellular): the mower has its own data connection, so it can push its GPS location to your phone from wherever it ends up, as long as it has battery and signal.
That’s why we treat 4G as the real line between “has anti-theft” and “has a PIN.” It also helps day to day: 4G keeps big yards connected beyond Wi-Fi range, and many mowers use it for network RTK (see our RTK vs LiDAR vs vision guide).
Two limits worth knowing. First, tracking depends on battery and cell coverage, so a thief who keeps the mower in a basement or drains it can defeat it. Second, a tracker tells you where the mower is; it doesn’t get it back. If you locate a stolen mower, give the location to the police rather than going to retrieve it yourself.
A backup option: the Dreame A3 AWD Pro has a dedicated slot for an Apple AirTag. That gives you a second, independent tracker on Apple’s Find My network that keeps working even if the mower’s own 4G is off. The MOVA LiDAX Ultra AWD is also AirTag compatible, and Roborock says its RockMow X1 models work with third-party trackers.
4G subscriptions: what’s included and what it costs
Cellular data isn’t free, and brands handle it differently. As of October 2026:
| Approach | Models | What you pay |
|---|---|---|
| 3 years included | LUBA 3 AWD, LUBA mini 2 AWD, Dreame A3 AWD Pro, MOVA LiDAX Ultra AWD | Nothing extra for the first 3 years (SlashGear reports MOVA charges €99/yr after that in Europe; US renewal pricing is unconfirmed) |
| 1 year included | Navimow i2 AWD, Navimow i215 LiDAR | i2 AWD is about $33/yr after year one; check Segway’s current rate for the i215 |
| Long anti-theft service | Sunseeker X7 Plus Gen 2 | 5-year anti-theft service listed by Sunseeker |
| Optional hardware or service | YUKA mini 2 (optional 4G module), GOAT A-series LiDAR Pro (cellular module), Sunseeker X5 (4G-GPS module), Yarbo (4G service sold separately) | Module or service price, plus any data plan |
| No 4G | GOAT O1000 LiDAR Pro | Not available |
For brands that list 4G without terms (WORX, eufy, Segway X-series, Husqvarna, Roborock, HOOKII, Airseekers, Greenworks and the ANTHBOT M5 LiDAR), check the current plan before you buy. Fees and included periods change, and that cost belongs in your total ownership math. Our robot mower cost calculator lets you add it in.
Is the subscription worth it? On a front lawn or an unfenced lot, yes. Thirty-odd dollars a year is small next to a $1,000 to $3,000 mower. In a fenced backyard where the mower parks in a garage, letting it lapse is a reasonable call, though you’ll lose remote access and possibly network RTK on some models.
PIN locks, lift alarms and geofences
These features don’t track a stolen mower. They make stealing it unappealing.
PIN lock and account binding. The mower won’t run without a code, and it’s tied to your app account. Most major brands use some form of this, and Mammotion describes a remote lock and account lock for its LUBA line. A thief can’t pair it to a new phone, which kills resale value. Always set a PIN that isn’t 0000 or 1234, and keep your app login secure.
Lift alarm. Tilt sensors detect when the mower is picked up, and the mower sounds a siren and pushes an alert to your phone. Dreame lists it on both A3 AWD models, and MOVA lists lift alerts on the LiDAX Ultra AWD. Husqvarna and WORX list an “alarm,” Roborock a “high-decibel alarm,” and Segway lists a “geofence alarm.” The siren won’t stop a determined thief, but it turns a quiet grab into a noisy one.
Geofence alerts. You get a notification when the mower leaves its mapped area. Combined with 4G, this is your early warning: you know it’s moving before you’d notice it’s missing.
Camera security patrol. The Dreame A3 AWD Pro can patrol the yard with its cameras, the MOVA LiDAX Ultra AWD adds human detection to its camera patrol and live video, and the LUBA 3 AWD and LUBA mini 2 AWD offer a live camera view in the app.
Physical protection: garages, dock placement and cameras
Software helps after the fact. These steps stop most theft before it starts.
Put the dock where the street can’t see it. A backyard or side yard behind a gate is ideal. If you must mow the front lawn, keep the dock in back and let the mower travel through a passage. Most current wire-free mowers support multiple zones connected by channels. Our robot mower setup guide walks through dock placement, which also has to satisfy power, a flat pad and, for RTK models, sky view.
Schedule mowing for when you’re home. Robot mowers are quiet enough to run at night, but an unattended mower in a dark front yard is the easiest grab there is. Night mowing is also bad for wildlife, which we cover in our pets, kids and wildlife safety guide.
Bring it inside when you travel. If you’re away for a week, a garage beats any alarm. It’s also the right home for the mower in winter. See our maintenance guide for winter storage.
Point a camera at the dock. A doorbell or floodlight camera with a motion zone over the dock deters theft and records it if it happens. Motion lights help too.
Latch your gates. It sounds obvious, but an open side gate is the most common path in.
Record the serial number. Photograph the serial label and your receipt and store both in the cloud. Police, the manufacturer and your insurer will all ask for them.
Insurance: what to check in your own policy
Many homeowners assume their policy covers a stolen robot mower. It might. We can’t tell you whether yours does, because coverage depends on your insurer, your policy form and your state. Before you buy, or at least before mowing season, ask your insurer or agent:
- Is lawn equipment stolen from the yard covered, or only from inside the garage or house?
- What’s my deductible? If it’s $1,000 and your mower cost $850, a claim won’t pay anything.
- Are there per-item limits or a cap on outdoor property?
- Would a claim affect my premium?
- If I rent, does my renter’s policy cover it?
If your mower is stolen, Husqvarna’s support guidance is a good template for any brand: report it to the police and note the case number, notify the manufacturer or dealer with your serial number and the date of loss, and contact your insurer. Telling the manufacturer matters, because some brands can flag the serial number or lock the unit remotely.
Who should prioritize anti-theft when buying
Make 4G a must-have if: you mow a front yard, your lot is unfenced, you live on a busy street, or you’ll leave the mower out while you travel. The Dreame A3 AWD Pro has the deepest feature list, the Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD includes 3 years of 4G plus live camera view, and the Segway Navimow i2 AWD is the cheapest model here with 4G tracking and a geofence alarm.
It matters less if: your yard is fenced, the dock sits out of sight and the mower lives in a garage overnight. In that case, choose on navigation, slopes and size first. Our buying guide covers what matters most, and the best robot lawn mowers of 2026 ranks the field.
Bottom line
A PIN lock and account binding make a stolen robot mower close to worthless, and 4G tracking gives you a real shot at getting it back. Most 2026 wire-free models have both, but check the table above and the subscription terms before you buy, especially if your mower will be visible from the street. Then do the free stuff: hide the dock, latch the gate, point a camera at it, and find out what your insurance actually covers.
If you’re still narrowing the field, the size matcher filters models by lawn area, and every model page lists its anti-theft features in the spec table.
