The verdict

The finish-quality pick: reviewers praise its clean, striped finish, on AWD hardware that handles real slopes. It's a strong buy at a discount, but at full price the LiDAR flagships give you more navigation for similar money.

What we like

  • Reviewed praised its manicured, striped results, with stripe and checkerboard patterns in the app
  • AWD, 70% slopes and a 4" max cut height
  • Network RTK on Gen 2 (some setups still use an antenna)

Watch out for

  • Gen 1 needs an RTK base, and reports differ on Gen 2, so check which version you're buying
  • Priced high against 2026 LiDAR rivals
  • Only IPX5 weather rating

Sunseeker Elite X7 Gen 2 / X7 Plus Gen 2 video review

Video by Mike O'Brien on YouTube. Independent creator content, shown as a reference. It is not part of our scoring.

The Sunseeker Elite X7 Gen 2 and X7 Plus Gen 2 are the finish-quality picks of the wire-free market. Reviewers describe a clean, stripe-friendly cut, on AWD hardware rated for 70% slopes. The drawbacks are price and some setup ambiguity. At premium-tier prices, they compete with 2026 LiDAR flagships that offer more navigation for similar money.

Who the Sunseeker X7 Gen 2 is for (and who should skip it)

It suits mid-to-large lawns, roughly half an acre to 1.5 acres on the Plus, where a striped, manicured finish matters as much as automation. Reviewed gave the X7 Plus Gen 2 an Editor’s Choice award for excellent mowing performance, hands-off wireless mapping and strong obstacle avoidance. It’s also one of the few robots with a meaningful night-mowing story, thanks to an iToF depth camera.

Skip it if your lawn sits under heavy, continuous shade: Reviewed listed “struggles in shaded spaces” as a con, and a LiDAR mower is the safer bet there. Skip it if you want the most capability per dollar, since the Dreame A3 AWD Pro and Segway Navimow X4 often sell for the same money or less. And skip the original X7 unless it’s deeply discounted, since it needs an RTK base station and lacks the Gen 2 vision upgrades.

Sunseeker’s AONavi system combines RTK satellite positioning with VSLAM 2.0 and a binocular-plus-iToF camera array. The headline improvement over Gen 1 is how long it can run on vision alone. Yanko Design reports VSLAM 2.0 keeps the mower going “for up to an hour” when the satellite fix drops under tree canopy, compared with about 10 minutes on the previous generation. On its yard, with mature oaks shading half the lawn, the mower held its line.

Reviewed’s experience under shade was less rosy, and setup took “trial and error.” The main challenge was positioning the RTK antenna somewhere with adequate sky view, after which performance improved significantly. Yanko Design also used an RTK base station. Our database lists the Gen 2 as not requiring a base station, and Sunseeker’s US page doesn’t mention one. Given these reports, check the box contents for your exact version and plan a spot with open sky either way. Our setup guide covers antenna and dock placement.

Mowing performance, slopes and terrain

The X7 Gen 2 is rated for 70% grade (35°), with AWD on 8.7” off-road wheels. Yanko Design found its hill-hold system kept the mower from sliding sideways on side slopes, and it handled a back embankment the reviewer had previously trimmed by hand. Reviewed also reported it handled slopes, curved edges and dips well. As with every rating, 70% assumes dry, short grass, so leave margin on wet slopes. Check your grades with the slope checker.

Obstacle avoidance gets good marks. Reviewed said it navigated mid-lawn trees and relocated obstacles well, and Yanko Design saw it steer around a coiled hose in near-total darkness using the iToF camera. That night capability is a genuine differentiator if you prefer the mower to run while the yard is empty. Our safety guide explains why night mowing is risky where rabbits, toads and other nocturnal wildlife are active.

Coverage, cutting and edges

Cut quality is the reason to choose this mower. The dual 14” floating discs carry six blades and follow the ground’s contours. Reviewed described “even, precisely cut results,” minimal uncut areas and striped patterns, though it noted some missed spots. Yanko Design reported “clean parallel stripes” and no scalping or matting on damp, thick St. Augustine. Electronic height adjustment runs from 0.8” to 4.0”, one of the widest ranges available, so it suits both short warm-season grasses and tall fescue.

Edge-following mode produced “crisp” borders in Yanko Design’s test. Expect to trim along fences and walls occasionally, as with any disc mower.

App, connectivity and anti-theft

The app offers multi-zone scheduling, spot cutting, multi-angle patterns, downloadable “lawn art” designs and Alexa or Google Assistant control. Over-the-air updates keep adding features.

Anti-theft is where the two versions differ. The Plus includes 4G-GPS tracking and geofence alerts as standard, while on the regular Gen 2 it’s an optional extra. Yanko Design notes that the 4G anti-theft service carries a subscription, though Sunseeker advertises a 5-year anti-theft service. Confirm what’s included with your version. If your yard faces the street, the Plus is the sensible choice. See our theft protection guide.

Ownership notes

  • Weather rating: IPX5 is a step below the IPX6 rivals carry. It’s fine for rain, but don’t hose the top deck down. See do robot mowers work in rain.
  • Version confusion: Gen 1, Gen 2 and Plus Gen 2 are sold side by side, with different coverage and positioning hardware. Check the exact model name.
  • Warranty and support: Sunseeker has a US presence, but confirm warranty terms with the seller.
  • Pricing: both the Gen 2 and the Plus sit in the premium tier, with the Plus costing more (October 2026). At full price it’s hard to recommend over LiDAR flagships, so watch for discounts.

How the Sunseeker X7 Gen 2 compares

The Segway Navimow X4 costs the same or less, has a wider 17” deck and an 84% rating, and has better-documented antenna-free setup. The Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD adds LiDAR for heavy shade and climbs 80% grades. The Dreame A3 AWD Pro is often the cheapest of the three on sale, though reviews of its software are mixed.

Bottom line

If a striped, golf-course look is your priority and your lawn has real slopes, the Sunseeker X7 Gen 2 is a robot reviewers praise for finish quality, with a rare ability to mow at night. It isn’t the best value at full price, it’s less proven in heavy shade, and you should confirm the version’s coverage and positioning hardware before buying. At a good discount, it’s an easy recommendation. Prices change often, so check the current deal.

Sunseeker X7 Gen 2 FAQ

Does the Sunseeker X7 Gen 2 need an RTK base station?
Sunseeker markets the Gen 2 as wire-free, using its AONavi system that fuses RTK satellite positioning with VSLAM 2.0 vision. However, both Reviewed and Yanko Design describe placing an RTK antenna or base station with a clear sky view during setup. Check the box contents for the exact version you are buying and plan for an antenna location, just in case.
What's the difference between the Sunseeker X7 Gen 2 and X7 Plus Gen 2?
The Plus costs more and includes 4G-GPS anti-theft tracking as standard, where it is optional on the regular Gen 2. Sunseeker advertises up to 1.5 acres for the series, while Yanko Design lists the regular Gen 2 at 0.75 acre, so confirm the rated area of your specific version before buying.
Can the Sunseeker X7 Gen 2 mow stripes?
Yes, and that is its biggest strength. Reviewed praised its manicured, striped results, and Yanko Design reported clean parallel stripes from the dual 14-inch floating discs. The app also offers multi-angle patterns and downloadable lawn-art designs. If a finished, striped look matters to you, it is among the better-regarded choices for that look.
Is the original Sunseeker X7 the same as the Gen 2?
No. The original X7, sold at Costco and rated for 0.75 acre, requires an RTK base station and lacks the Gen 2's VSLAM 2.0 vision upgrade. Yanko Design reports Gen 2 can keep navigating on vision for up to an hour when satellite signal drops, versus about 10 minutes on the previous generation. Check the model name carefully before buying.
