A quality robot mower can reasonably be expected to last about 5–10 years, with the battery replaced every 2–5 years along the way. The chassis, motors and electronics usually outlive the battery, and blades are a cheap consumable you swap several times a season. The honest caveat: today’s wire-free mowers mostly launched in the last few years, so nobody has 10-year data on them yet.
Here’s what actually determines robot mower lifespan, what wears out first, what replacements cost, and which warranties we could verify.
How long do robot mowers last? A component-by-component view
There’s no independent study of robot mower lifespan, so the best evidence comes from warranty lengths, manufacturer battery guidance and owner reports. Major brands now warrant their mowers for 3–4 years, which is a reasonable signal that they expect the core hardware to go well beyond that.
| Component | Typical life (estimate) | Replace or repair? |
|---|---|---|
| Chassis, electronics, motors | 5–10 years with care | Motors and boards are repairable on major brands |
| Battery | 2–5 years (Husqvarna’s figure for Automower) | User- or dealer-replaceable on most models |
| Blades | Weeks to a couple of months each | Cheap consumable |
| Wheels and tires | Several seasons, faster on paths and hills | Replaceable |
| Dock contacts and power supply | Years; contacts can corrode | Replaceable |
| App and cloud support | Depends on the brand | Not in your control |
The biggest variable isn’t the hardware. It’s how hard the mower works, how it’s stored in winter, and whether the brand is still supporting it in year six.
Robot mower battery life: runtime vs lifespan
“Battery life” means two different things.
Runtime is how long the mower runs on one charge, typically an hour or two, after which it docks and recharges. Runtime varies a lot: the WORX Landroid Vision Cloud runs about 60–80 minutes per charge, while the Lymow One Plus is rated for about 0.57 acre per charge. Short runtime isn’t a defect, because the mower simply takes more trips to the dock.
Lifespan is how many seasons the battery lasts before it holds too little charge to finish your lawn on schedule. Husqvarna says Automower batteries typically last between 2 and 5 years and lists the signs of ageing: the mower returns to charge more often than usual, or stops on the lawn with an empty battery and no error message.
The two are linked. As the battery ages, runtime shrinks. On a lawn well within the mower’s rating, you might not notice for years, because the mower has slack in its schedule. On a lawn at the edge of its rating, a 20% capacity loss can mean the mower no longer finishes. That’s one more reason to buy a model rated for more area than you have. Our size matcher builds in that headroom.
Battery chemistry and charge cycles
Most robot mowers use lithium-ion packs, the same broad family as power-tool batteries. General lithium-ion packs are commonly rated for several hundred to around a thousand full charge cycles before falling to roughly 70–80% of original capacity. Exact ratings vary by cell type and aren’t usually published for mowers.
Some models use lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4), which is heavier but generally rated for many more cycles. The tracked Lymow One Plus uses a LiFePO4 pack, for example.
Here’s why 2–5 years is plausible. In peak season a robot may run one or more full charge cycles a day, so a busy mower can rack up a couple of hundred cycles a year. At several hundred to a thousand cycles of rated life, that’s a few seasons for a hard-worked battery and longer for one with spare capacity.
Heat matters too. Lithium batteries age faster when they’re stored or charged hot, which is why Husqvarna recommends keeping the charging station in a shaded or cool spot.
Robot mower battery replacement cost
Most replacement batteries cost about $100–$300, depending on brand and capacity. Some reference points:
- Mammotion’s US store lists the battery for the LUBA mini AWD 1500 / YUKA mini 800 in the middle of that range.
- Third-party batteries for older Husqvarna Automowers sell in Europe for roughly €55–€75, though genuine packs cost more.
On many models the pack is user-replaceable with a screwdriver. Mammotion describes its batteries as modular and plug-and-play. Others are a dealer job. Before buying a mower, look up its battery price and availability on the brand’s parts store. A mower whose battery you can’t buy is a mower with a fixed lifespan.

What else wears out: blades, wheels and motors
Blades. The small pivoting razor blades dull quickly, especially on sandy soil or lawns with sticks. Many owners swap them every month or two in season; follow your brand’s schedule. A pack costs little and takes minutes to fit. Dull blades tear grass and make the blade motor work harder, so don’t stretch them.
Wheels and tires. Treads wear faster on AWD mowers that cross paths and driveways, and on hilly lawns where the wheels slip. Worn treads reduce grip on slopes, so check them each spring. Our slope limits guide explains why traction drops on wet grass.
Motors. Many current models use brushless drive and blade motors, which have no brushes to wear out. The blade motor has the hardest life, spinning in wet clippings and dust. Keeping the deck clean helps.
Seals and weatherproofing. Ratings range from IPX4 on the Husqvarna 435 iQ AWD to IP67 on the Mammotion YUKA mini 2. A hose rinse is fine on most, but check the manual before pressure washing, and inspect seals as the mower ages. See do robot mowers work in rain for what each rating means.

Software support and brand risk
This is the lifespan question few buyers ask. A wire-free mower isn’t just hardware. It depends on an app, a cloud account, cellular service for tracking, and on many models a network RTK correction service for positioning. If any of those disappear, the mower may lose features or stop navigating properly.
Real-world risks to weigh:
- Cellular subscriptions and network changes. Some mowers include 4G for a set period, such as three years on the LUBA 3 AWD, while others charge after year one, like about $33/year on the Navimow i2 AWD. US carriers shut down their 3G networks in 2022, which stranded plenty of older connected devices. A 4G module will eventually face the same question.
- Brand longevity. Husqvarna has sold robotic mowers since the mid-1990s and has a US dealer network. Segway, Dreame, ECOVACS and eufy are large consumer-electronics companies but relatively new to US lawn care. Smaller brands like ANTHBOT and Lymow carry the most uncertainty.
- Offline capability. Ask whether the mower can run its schedule and edit maps over Bluetooth without the cloud. That’s your fallback if the app ever goes away.
This isn’t a reason to avoid newer brands. Their navigation is often a generation ahead, as we explain in our Husqvarna Automower vs Mammotion LUBA comparison. But it’s a reason to value warranty length and US support, not just specs.
Robot mower warranties by brand
We checked each brand’s current US warranty pages in October 2026. Terms change, so confirm at purchase.
| Brand and models | Mower warranty | Battery warranty |
|---|---|---|
| Husqvarna Automower iQ | 4 years (US and Canada) | 3 years, per retailer listings |
| Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD, LUBA mini 2 AWD, YUKA mini 2 | 3 years | 3 years |
| Segway Navimow X3, X4 and i-series | 3 years | 2 years |
| Dreame A3 AWD and A3 AWD Pro | Check the current warranty terms (Dreame’s US and Canadian pages differ) | Check the current warranty terms |
| WORX Landroid Vision Cloud | Check the current US warranty terms | Check the current warranty terms |
| ECOVACS, Sunseeker, eufy, ANTHBOT, Lymow | Check the current warranty terms | Check the current warranty terms |
Mammotion sells an optional “Mammotion Care” plan that adds a year, and Navimow offers optional third-party protection plans through Seel. Outside the US, Husqvarna extends Automower warranties to 5 years if the mower gets annual dealer servicing. US terms differ, so ask your dealer.
On warranty alone, the Husqvarna Automower 420 iQ leads, and Mammotion is the standout for covering the battery for the full three years on the LUBA 3 AWD.
How to extend your robot mower’s lifespan
- Store it indoors for winter. Husqvarna advises a dry, frost-free place and a full charge before storage so the battery doesn’t drain completely. Follow your own manual’s charge guidance.
- Put the dock in shade. Cooler charging slows battery ageing.
- Buy headroom. A mower rated 25–50% above your lawn size runs fewer cycles a day, which is easier on the battery and motors.
- Swap blades on schedule and clean the deck and wheels regularly. Our maintenance guide has a season-by-season checklist.
- Skip mowing in heavy rain. Wet clippings pack the deck and strain the blade motor. Use the rain sensor or schedule around storms.
- Keep firmware updated. Updates often improve navigation, battery management and obstacle handling.
- Inspect each spring: wheel treads, dock contacts, the power cable and the housing seals.
- Protect it from theft. A stolen mower has a lifespan of zero. Turn on PIN and tracking, as covered in our theft protection guide.
If you’re still choosing, factor support and warranty into the decision alongside specs. Our how to choose a robot lawn mower guide walks through it, and the robot mower comparison chart shows every model side by side. To see how ownership costs add up, try the cost calculator.
